Nicosia Turkish Maarif College Wins the 25th High Schools Mathematics Competition

Organised by the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Arts and Sciences Faculty, Mathematics Department, the 25th High Schools Mathematics Competition finals were held with the financial support of Onay Fadil Demirciler Education and Science Foundation at EMU with the participation of the 19 May Turkish Maarif College, Nicosia Turkish Maarif College, Famagusta Turkish Maarif College and 20 Temmuz High School. The finals took place at the CL Building Mustafa Afsin Ersoy Hall in front of a large audience. Speaking before the final commenced, Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazim Mahmudov provided information about the history of the competition and wished all of the schools the best of luck. Prof. Dr. Mahmudov also thanked the Onay Fadil Demirciler Education and Science Foundation for their financial support. Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ozarslan touched upon the Mathematics Department operating under their Faculty and provided information about undergraduate, masters and doctoral degree programs. Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam highlighted that EMU is a world university with a mission and vision underlining that the students need not look any further for university where they can construct their future. Prof. Dr. Osam concluded his speech by wishing all schools that made it to the finals the best of luck.

The results of the exciting and competitive final are as follows:

The Nicosia Turkish Maarif College team comprising of AlAra Guclu, Berk Karacin and ZekA Kerim Okaygun finished first with their mathematics teachers Deniz Ahcihoca Cobanoglu and Zehra Kavuklu Tokkan,

The 19 May Turkish Maarif College team comprising of Kardelen Coban, Ugur Berkay Caliskan and Umut Zengin finished second with their mathematics teacher Eser Ozyalcin,

The Famagusta Turkish Maarif College team comprising of Aynur Samanci, Saadet AlAra Aktuglu and Tugra Tolga Baki finished third with their mathematics teacher GulAy Aksoy

The 20 Temmuz High School team comprising of Eser Eroglu, Halime Karabag and Harun GurgAlnmez won the ‘Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award’ with their mathematics teachers Emine Hacisevki and Remziye Korkuter.

The TED College Cyprus team consisting of Ahmet Harnuboglu, Erden Caner and Emir Akcesme finished second at the semi-final stage of the competition to earn the 25th Year Special Award with their mathematics teacher Melek Gavani.

At a ceremony which took place after the competition, the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College team were presented their award by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Sonuc Zorlu Ogurlu. The 19 May Turkish Maarif College team were presented their award by National Education Supervision and Evaluation Board President Ahmet Karahan. The Famagusta Turkish Maarif College team were presented their award by Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ozarslan. The 20 Temmuz High School team were presented their award by the late Onay Fadil Demirciler’s wife Serpin Demirciler. The TED College Cyprus team were presented their award by Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazim Mahmudov.

Awards were also given for the Individual Category

Ugur Berkay Caliskan and Umut Zengin from the 19 May Turkish Maarif College shared first place in the individual category of the competition which took place on the 16th of April 2019. Tugra Tolga Baki from the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College came second and ZekA Okaygun from the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College came third. Ahmet Harnupoglu (TED College Cyprus) won the 25th Year Special Award and Alara Guclu (Nicosia Turkish Maarif College) won the Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award. Their awards were presented by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Sonuc Zorlu Ogurlu, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Ozarslan, Faculty of Arts and Sciences Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Ayhan Bilsel, Mathematics Department Chair Prof. Dr. Nazim Mahmudov and the late Onay Fadil Demirciler’s daughter Naciye Demirciler.

Nicosia Turkish Maarif College Becomes the Perpetual Owner of the Onay Fadil Demirciler Shield

The Nicosia Turkish Maarif College became the perpetual owner of the Onay Fadil Demirciler Shield II which was introduced in 2014 for a 5-year period as a result of having their name engraved on the shield more than any other school during this period of time

The Nicosia Turkish Maarif College is also the most Successful School during the 25-Year Period

As a result of this year marking the 25th anniversary of the competition, an evaluation of the last 25 years of the competition also took place. This evaluation revealed that the Nicosia Turkish Maarif College was the most successful school during this period with a total of 12 first-place finishes. The Nicosia Turkish Maarif College was followed by the 20 Temmuz High School and the Famagusta Turkish Maarif College who respectively had 7 and 2 first-place finishes. During this period the 19 May Turkish Maarif College, Guzelyurt Turkish Maarif College and the Bulent Ecevit Anatolian High School obtained 1 first-place finish each. Therefore these schools received the 25th Year Onay Fadil Demirciler Special Award. The Namik Kemal High School and the ErenkAly High School were given the 25th Year Mathematics Department Special Award. Current and former-principals and teachers who played a part in these achievements were also invited to the ceremony where they were presented awards.
