Nicosia stays focused on its energy program, a diplomatic source tells CNA

Nicosia stays focused on its energy program and does not get distracted by Turkish gimmicks that aim to create tension, a diplomatic source told CNA.

According to Turkish reports, the Turkish navy prevented a Greek frigate from harassing “Barbaros”, a Turkish research vessel, causing thus a crisis in the Mediterranean.

Asked to comment on the reports, the same source said that the incident has been already refuted by the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

Another official source speaking to CNA said that no heated incident took place in the Eastern Mediterranean between Greek and Turkish warships, attributing Turkish reports to political considerations targeting Cyprus’ energy designs in the region.

The same source said that there is no crisis but rather the usual Turkish provocations while Nicosia continues to monitor the maritime area where hydrocarbon exploration activities are underway or planned in the future.

No incident has been recorded while Nicosia is used to Turkish provocations which cannot divert us from our program to develop our energy resources, it was noted.

Turkish reports were attributed by the same source to efforts to cause tension, as the day for Exxon Mobil’s drilling in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus draws nearer.

The Republic of Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Ankara, which does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, sent recently its seismographic research vessel Barbaros to carry out unauthorized surveys in the Republics exclusive economic zone.
