Nicosia hosts FIBA Europe’s annual General Assembly

Nicosia hosts today the annual General Assembly of FIBA Europe.

In statements to CNA, President of Cyprus Basketball Federation Louis Demetriou, has said that this is a major event for Cyprus. For the first time, such a great sporting event takes place in Cyprus. We are very happy that the General Assembly will be held here and we believe that we will also promote Cypriot basketball and our island, he added.

He noted that many and important people of the world basketball will visit Cyprus, among them the former basketball player of Russian National team and current President of the Russian Basketball Federation, Andrei Kirilenko, the former member of the National Teams of the Soviet Union and Lithuania, and current President of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, Arvydas Sabonis, the former player of Panathinaikos and Serbia National team Dejan Bodiroga, the former Spanish basketball player the National team of Spain Jorge Garbajosa and the former star of the National team of Croatia Stojan Vrankovic.

Demetriou said that Cyprus Federation has worked very hard and systematically in order to secure the hosting of the General Assembly, having received 26 out of the 46 votes cast.

Asked about the agenda of the Assembly, he said a discussion and an evaluation of the basketball events of 2016-17 will take place, such as of the Basketball Champions League. In addition, economic affairs, the financial support of the national federations, as well as the assignments of the major FIBA events, will be among the topics to be discussed.

The Assembly will be attended by the President and the Secretary General of FIBA and FIBA Europe as well as by 150 delegates from 50 different countries.
