Next three years, important for Cyprus, new Chairman of Cyprus Amateur Athletic Association tells CNA

The year 2018 was a successful one for Cyprus athletics, new Chairman of Cyprus Amateur Athletic Association (KOEAS), Pericles Markaris, has told the Cyprus News Agency, noting that we are entering an important three-year period, with two world athletics championships and the Olympic Games of Tokyo in 2020.

Markaris, who succeeds former Chairman AntonisDrakos, who served for 26 years and now is honorary Chairman, spoke to CNA about his vision, the Associations future plans and the upcoming sports events.

In an interview with CNA, Markaris said that one of the Associations goals is to form the new generation of champions, who will complement the already established team of elite athletes of Cyprus sports.

Markaris pointed out that in athletics we have probably the top athletes that Cyprus has at the moment”.

Invited to give an assessment for KOEAS in 2018, he said that last year can be described as successful for the Cyprus athletics.

He recalled the bronze medal of ApostolosParellis in discus, at the Commonwealth Games, the two gold medals at the Mediterranean Games by ApostolosParellis in discus and EleniArtemata in 400 meters, as well as the qualification of Milan Trajkovic, at the final of the World Athletics Championship, and three pancyprian records in 800 meters and 1500 meters by Natalia Evangelidou and 400 meters twice by EleniArtemata.

He continued by saying that Cyprus ranked first at Games among 17 European countries.

“We look forward to 2019, which is quite rich in sports action and includes many significant events”, he told the Cyprus News Agency.

The KOEAS Chairman said that “we are entering a significant three-year period, during which there are two world athletics championships and the Olympic Games in 2020 in Tokyo”.

“It is an exciting three years period for sports at international level, but also for Cyprus”, he said.

He added that apart from the Word Championship in Doha coming autumn, there are other events this year, including the Games of the Small States of Europebeginning of June and expressed hope that Cypriot ahtletes will be distinguished both at individual and national team level.

He also said that the top local event is the Cypriot championship to be held mid-June.

“We are on a good path and we hope to achieve good results. Our aim is to improve our champions personal records and to create the new generation of champions, who will complement the already established team of elite athletes”, he concluded.
