Newly elected SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis expressed the party’s firm support to the resumption of Cyprus talks for a just and viable solution in the framework of UN resolutions, in a telephone call with President Nikos Christodoulides.
President Christodoulides congratulated Kasselakis, during a telephone conversation on Monday, SYRIZA said in a press release.
During their conversation, the press release added, Kasselakis stressed the firm support of his party for the resumption of the dialogue for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem in the framework of the UN Resolutions, from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, as well as the appointment of a UN Special Envoy for the Cyprus problem.
Moreover, Christodoulides and Kasselakis discussed the upcoming visit of the President of SYRIZA to Cyprus.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
