New Cypriot Ambassador and Swiss President discuss bilateral relations and Cyprus issue

The bilateral relations between Cyprus and Switzerland and the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem, were discussed at the meeting of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Switzerland, with residence in Rome, Yiorgos Christofides, and the President of the Swiss Confederation, Alain Berset.

Christofides, before the meeting, presented on January 10 2023, his Letters of Credence to Berset, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Afterwards. He conveyed the warm regards and wishes by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, to Berset, for prosperity and progress of Switzerland and its people, as well as his congratulations for his election to the Presidency of the Swiss Confederation for the year 2023.

At the meeting, according to the announcement, the Ambassador underlined the strong bonds between Cyprus and Switzerland, with particular emphasis in economy, tourism, migration and the protection of cultural heritage and reaffirmed his intention to exert “every effort for the further strengthening of the close and productive cooperation between the two countries at a multilateral level and the deepening of their already excellent bilateral relations”.

In view of the interest that Switzerland has exemplified throughout the years for the Cyprus problem, but also in view of the country’s assumption of its duties, as of 1st January 2023, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the UN, Christofides, informed President Berset about the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem and the illegal and provocative behaviour of Turkey.

In this respect, he underlined the huge importance we attach to the support by the international community to the efforts the Government makes for finding a settlement to the Cyprus problem within the agreed UN framework and on the basis of the relevant UNSC Resolutions and with full respect to International and European Law.

President Berset reassured, on his part, of the steadfast and longstanding adherence of Switzerland to the respect for the principles of International Law and underlined the importance that his country attributes to the further enhancement of its bilateral relations with Cyprus.
