National Council to convene on the 12th of November

The National Council, top advisory body to the President of Cyprus on the Cyprus issue, will convene on the 12th of November, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has announced, adding that on the 6th of November President Nicos Anastasiades will give a press conference.

Prodromou said that the President will brief the members of the National Council on the meeting he held recently with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci and the meeting with UN SGs envoy Jane Holl Lute.

He added that the President will give a press conference to inform the public about the thoughts and idea for a decentralized federation in order to increase the functionality of the system.

Replying to questions, the Spokesman did not rule out the possibility of a meeting taking place on the 12 of November between President Anastasiades and the Turkish Cypriot leader in the event that there is an agreement and an announcement can be made regarding mobile telephony.

Asked about the meeting that took place under Greek Cypriot negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis regarding mobile telephony, Prodromou said that he has nothing to add to this.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
