National Council session underway in Nicosia

A National Council session is underway at the Presidential Palace, in Nicosia, to discuss the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue. President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is expected to brief members about his recent contacts with Jane Holl Lute, the UN Secretary-General’s envoy.

It is expected, moreover, to discuss the recent contacts of Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras in Ankara. Tsipras, who paid an official visit in Turkey on February 5 and 6, held talks in Ankara last Tuesday with Turkish President Erdogan discussing, inter alia, the Cyprus issue.

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou wrote yesterday on twitter that President Anastasiades had a telephone conversation with Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras, late on Thursday, and was updated on Tsipras’ contacts in Turkey. With close cooperation we continue the efforts for a solution that will bring peace and security in Cyprus Prodromou added.

DISY President Averof Neofytou, AKEL Secretary-General Andros Kyprianou, DIKO President Nikolas Papadopoulos, EDEK President Marinos Sizopoulos, Solidarity Movement President Eleni Theocharous, Citizen’s Alliance Party President Giorgos Lillikas, Cyprus Green Party President Giorgos Perdikis and ELAM President Andreas Christou are attending the meeting.

The former President of Cyprus George Vassiliou, negotiator Andreas Mavroyiannis, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou and Deputy Government Spokeswoman Klelia Vasiliou are also present.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
