MP Votsis says Cyprus can play an important role in EU’s energy security

The important role that Cyprus can play as an EU Member State and as a Mediterranean country in the Unions energy security and in the strategy for gas supplies was highlighted by Cyprus Parliamentarian Angelos Votsis.

Votsis participated as Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Commerce , Industry and Tourism, in the Meeting of the Presidents of the Energy Committees of the Parliaments of the EU Member States in Sofia, Bulgaria.

According to an announcement issued by the Parliament, Votsis pointed out that the role Cyprus can play could be beneficial for the EU and the Eastern Mediterranean region as it strengthens the implementation of the EU Neighbourhood Policy. Votsis referred to the developments in the volatile region of the Eastern Mediterranean, saying that it could be a potential gas hub as a result of the significant gas exploration in Israel, Cyprus and Egypt. He also highlighted the geostrategic energy partnerships that Cyprus has established with neighbouring countries.

Cyprus MP also referred to the Turkish provocations in the Republics exclusive economic zone , pointing out that Cyprus has a sovereign right to explore and exploit the reserves in its EEZ. He also called on Turkey to fulfil its obligations towards the EU and Cyprus, as a Member State.
