Mogherini reiterates EC will to contribute to the resumption of Cyprus talks, AKEL Sec. Gen. says

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Federica Moghrini, reiterated the will of the European Commission and herself to contribute towards the resumption of negotiations and the resolution of the Cyprus issue, in a working meeting earlier this morning, with AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou, at the EC headquarters in Brussels.

In his statements to the press after the meeting, the Secretary-General of AKEL, Andros Kyprianou said that their discussion was substantial and productive, thanking the High Representative for her willingness to contribute in this direction.

“We had a very productive and very substantive discussion with Mrs Mogherini, during which we discussed the situation regarding the Cyprus problem and how the European Union could contribute, first and foremost, in the resumption of negotiations and their completion with an agreement that would lead to a solution and the reunification of Cyprus”, Kyprianou said.

Furthermore, he thanked Mogerini because she has reiterated her will and the EUs willingness to contribute in this direction, especially with regard to the issue of security, which is very important and is causing concern in both communities, both in Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. “

“Mogherini has made it clear that the EU could help in this direction in very specific ways and by EU contribution as a safety factor in Cyprus,” said Kyprianou.

“I think it was a substantive discussion, he said adding that of course things will be determined by the decisions taken by the UN Secretary-General on the basis of the discussions he has with the two leaders on the island but also the guarantor powers”.
