Minister of Transport, Communication and Works Marios Demetriades participated on Wednesday in the deliberations of the EU Ministerial Meeting on road safety and shipping that took place in Malta, which holds the Presidency of the Council of the EU for this semester.
In his intervention, Demetriades highlighted the role of road safety and presented the national action framework for 2012-2020. He referred to the successful results of Cyprus in road safety in 2016 and asked the EU to adopt more ambitious EU targets.
The deliberations concluded with the adoption of the Valetta Declaration on Road Safety.
In addition, the Ministerial Conference discussed issues related to shipping and the EUs priorities in terms of maritime transport until 2020 and adopted the Valletta Declaration.
In his intervention, Demetriades welcomed the initiative of the Maltese Presidency to include the issue in its program and underlined its importance for the EU economy.
Meanwhile, Demetriades participated in a Maritime Conference organized by the Maltese Presidency which was attended by interested parties from the industry in Europe and third countries.
The Cypriot Minister was also invited to a panel discussion on the future of Europes maritime sector, where he analysed the current situation in the field and proposed specific actions for the viability of the sector.
