Minister of Health visits Cuba and Athens

Minster of Health Constantinos Ioannou, participated in the International Convention on Public Health that was held in Cuba where he had the opportunity to analyze the reforms planned in the Cyprus Health sector.

According to an official press release, during the convention, Ioannou met with Dr. Carissa F. Etienne, Director at Pan American Health Organisation. Ioannou analysed the current health system in Cyprus and presented the ongoing reforms in the health sector.

According to Dr Etienne, based on the World Health Organizations policy, for a national health system to be successful, it must be designed in such a way that it will focus on Primary Health Care, which is the main pillar of any health plan. Etienne said the Cyprus Health Plan is properly designed and expressed certainty that the principles governing the Cyprus Health Plan will bring multiple benefits to the patients in the country.

Ioannou also held a separate meeting with the Cuban Health Minister and recently elected Vice President of the Cuban government, Roberto Morales Ojeda, where they discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, promoting cooperation in research and training and the possibility of exchanging health expertise. Cubas national health system is considered one of the best in the world and based on the family doctor institution, while pharmaceutical companies that produce innovative medicines are active in the country.

During the meeting, a memorandum of cooperation covering pharmaceutical, education, research and know-how exchange fields was delivered, to be signed in the immediate future.

The Cypriot Minister also visited clinics to see how the family doctor system works.

The Minister of Health will travel to Athens for a formal meeting with his Greek counterpart, Dr Andreas Xanthos.
