Minister of Education briefs European Commissioner on Cyprus’ progress regarding equality and non-discrimination

Cypriot Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Prodromos Prodromou pointed out Cyprus’ progress in terms of strengthening gender equality, reducing various forms of discrimination and social exclusion and ensuring the rights of citizens with disabilities, in a meeting on Wednesday with the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli, on the sidelines of the IDAHOT + Forum in Limassol, where she was an official guest.

Prodromou briefed the European Commissioner on the strategic actions promoted by his Ministry for the integration of children with migratory biography in the educational system of Cyprus. He noted, at the same time, that, the Ministry has proceeded to plan for the reception of pupils from Ukraine in public schools, at all levels. He also referred to the services and programs offered by Special Education, in order to address the special needs of children with disabilities or other special educational needs.

Prodromou also presented the actions implemented for dealing with and eliminating racism, making special reference to the Code of Conduct against Racism and the Guide to the Management and Recording of Racist Incidents, as well as to the School Network to Support the implementation of the Anti-Racism Policy of the Ministry of Education.

Prodromou also discussed with the European Commissioner about actions of the Ministry aimed at addressing social stereotypes, gender-based violence and promoting the sexual education of students in the school environment.

Finally, Prodromou said that he was ready to continue and upgrade the cooperation with the European institutions, taking into account the contribution of co-financed programs,

In the same context, the Commissioner for Equality stressed the importance of education in promoting issues related to her portfolio.
