Minister of Agriculture meets with Greek counterparts in Athens

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, Costas Kadis, who began on Thursday a three-day official visit in Athens, held meetings with his counterparts, Evangelos Apostolou and Sokratis Famellos, during which they discussed topics of common interest.

During his meeting with Minister of Agricultural Development and Food, Evangelos Apostolou, Minister Kadis focused on Cyprus’ drought problem, which has serious consequences on the agriculture sector.

The two Ministers also discussed Greek-Cypriot cooperation to address illegal trading of Cyprus potatoes in the Greek market. Moreover, they agreed on the need for a bilateral agreement between Cyprus’ Veterinary Services and Greece’s Service for Animal Health, in order to deal with bovine spongiform encephalopathy diseases.

Later on, , Minister Kadis met with Alternate Minister of Environment and Energy, Sokratis Famellos. During their meeting, the two Ministers discussed about the problem of climate change, focusing on possible bilateral and regional initiatives that could be undertaken in order to address its consequences. ?he reinforcement of Greek-Cypriot cooperation to prevent wildfires and to preserve biodiversity was also discussed. The Ministers agreed to organize a special workshop in Cyprus, that would focus on the exchange of good practices and expertise on habitat preservation.

During his visit in Athens, Minister Kadis participated in the 1st International Conference, UNESCO Global Geoparks in Greece and Cyprus. He will also attend the inaugurations of two environmental centers of the LIFE program entitled For Open Forests.
