Meeting of the Ambassador of Cyprus in Moscow with the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia

The Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Moscow, Mr Leonidas Markides, met on 23 January 2018 with the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Mr Kirill. The courtesy meeting was held at the Patriarchal and Synodic Residence of the Holy Monastery of St. Daniel in Moscow.

At the meeting, the excellent relations between Cyprus and Russia were reaffirmed. Ambassador Markides briefed the Patriarch on the latest developments of the Cyprus question, the non-solution of which was characterized by the Patriarch as an “open wound”, not only for the Cypriots, but also for the entire Orthodox world.

The discussion between the Patriarch and the Ambassador also covered the destruction of the cultural and religious heritage in the occupied areas of Cyprus, and the efforts made by the Government and the Church of Cyprus to repatriate religious heirlooms illegally exported and traded on the international markets.
