Lute’s meeting with Mogherini confirms that the EU is part of the effort for a Cyprus solution, Spokesman says

Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou has said that the meeting the UN Secretary General’s envoy on Cyprus Jane Holl Lute had on Wednesday in Brussels with the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini confirms that the EU is part of the effort aiming to reach a Cyprus settlement and this is something positive.

Responding to questions on Thursday, Prodromou said that Lute has undertaken to fulfill a mission entrusted to her by the UNSG. We are waiting for the next meeting with her here in Nicosia in the framework with a view to determine the terms of reference so that the negotiations resume, he added.

The spokesman noted that the way Lute will carry out her mission is up to her, noting that her meeting with Mogherini confirms that the EU is part of the effort aiming to reach a Cyprus settlement and this is something positive.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
