Lute will have other meetings, UN SG’s spokesperson says

UN Secretary General’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has confirmed that Guterres’ Special Envoy Jane Holl Lute will no doubt have other meetings, adding however that the UN are not in a position to announce them yet.

Dujarric was replying to a journalist’s question on whether Lute, who visited Cyprus yesterday and met with the two leaders, will have more meetings with representatives of the guarantor powers of Cyprus, Greece, Britain and Turkey.

She was indeed in Cyprus, where she met both the Turkish community leader and the Greek community leader, he said, adding that I think she is on the way back to New York now.

According to the UN official, Lute is basically implementing the Secretary-General’s instructions that outlined in his report to the Security Council to continue the discussions, to see how the process is going.

And she will have meetings, no doubt she will have other meetings, but we are not in a position to announce them as of yet, he noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
