Live: Macron marks 175th anniversary of abolition of slavery in France

French President Emmanuel Macron will mark the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in France on Thursday with a tribute to ex-slave Toussaint Louverture, father of Haiti’s independence and a “tireless fighter” for freedom, the Elysée presidential palace announced.

Macron is expected to pay tribute to the general and freed ex-slave Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803) on Thursday at the Château de Joux in the Doubs region on the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in France.

Expected at midday at the Château de Joux, where the Franco-Haitian general was imprisoned until his death, the French president is due to lay a wreath in front of the bust of the freed ex-slave before giving a speech.
