It is important that the UN support the Cyprus process, Spokesman says

It is important that the United Nations and the UN Secretary General support the process for a Cyprus settlement and offer their good offices, Government Spokesman Prodromos Prodromou said on Friday, referring to efforts currently underway by UN envoy Jane Holl Lute to create the preconditions for the resumption of talks.

Prodromou said President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades was aware that Lute was contemplating an idea, which could prove useful for our aim, the drafting of reference points and the resumption of negotiations, an idea which is mainly of a procedural nature.

Replying to questions, Prodromou said the aim of the Greek Cypriot side was for negotiations with prospects for success, utilising the framework submitted by Antonio Guterres, with all the parameters, picking up where the talks stalled in Crans Montana.

Prodromou pointed out that the Turkish side was trying to deviate the discussion as if the Cyprus problem was merely one of political participation.

Turkey, he said, was trying to avoid any reference to security, and seems to be aiming at cancelling Lute’s initiative.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
