Interior Minister discusses migration issue in Helsinki with EASO Executive Director

For the third consecutive year, Cyprus holds the first place as a host country for asylum seekers in relation to its population, and is called upon to address substantive and disproportionate challenges, Minister of the Interior Constantinos Petrides pointed out on Friday during a meeting in Helsinki with the new Executive Director of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), Nina Gregori.

The meeting took place in the framework of Petrides’ contacts to relieve the Republic of Cyprus of the excessive migratory pressures it has been facing over the past few years.

Petrides acknowledged the need to strengthen existing structures and procedures, in order to address and prevent migratory flows.

In this context, a meeting will take place next week in Cyprus to further examine the possibility of an MoU between Cyprus and EASO, as an additional measure in addressing migration pressures.
