Improving the country’s deterrent capability a “top priority” Cyprus President says

Our priority is the continuous improvement of the country’s deterrent capability to the maximum extent possible, President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, said on Wednesday.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Loukas Hadjimichael, at the Presidential Palace, President Anastasiades said that “while our country continues to be under the illegal Turkish occupation, the National Guard is called, under the guidance of its leadership, to continue defending the territorial integrity and national sovereignty.”

The President addressing Hadjimichael said, that “taking into account the high mission entailed by the position in question, your selection was based on the excellent training and knowledge you possess, as well as the valuable experience you gained as a result of the long and successful service in the ranks of the National Guard.”

Hadjimichael referred in turn to the “particular honor” he feels while assuming this post and said he senses the grave responsibility assigned to him, following the Cabinet decision of August 22, 2022, under President Anastasiades.

President Anastasiades expressed the gratitude of the government, the state and the people of Cyprus people towards the outgoing Deputy Chief, Costas Chrysiliou.

The President also noted that Hadjimichael’s appointment also entails many responsibilities. “I assure you that the state will aid the work you are called to continue”, he said, and wished Hadjimichael every success in his mission.
