If a demining proposal is submitted, we shall respond, President says

When and if such a proposal is submitted, we will respond, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said, invited to comment on information, based on which the Turkish Cypriot leader intends to submit a proposal for demining the Deryneia area, in order to give access to the beach and serve his plans for the construction of houses.

‘When such a proposal is submitted, we will respond” the President told journalists on his way to the Nareg Armenian School for the end-of-year celebration.

He added that “we are not aware of such an intention. We have neither information nor a proposal from the Turkish Cypriot side.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
