I will continue to struggle for Cyprus’ reunification until my last day in office, Anastasiades stresses

Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, assured on Tuesday that he will continue until his last day in office to struggle for the reunification of Cyprus, to free the country and to get rid of the occupation troops.

Invited to comment on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, who said that he will not meet Anastasiades in New York, as the latter’s term of office is coming to its end, and asked if he will end his efforts regarding the Cyprus problem, Anastasiades stressed that his own programme and efforts do not rely at all on Tatar’s intentions and views.

“Therefore, I will continue until my last day in office as President of the Republic to struggle for the thing that we all do: to reunite our homeland, to free it from the occupation and to get rid of the troops, in spite of the fact that Mr. Tatar does not like this,” he added.

To a remark by a journalist that there is a rhetoric by Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, against Greece mainly and asked if there are any concerns and information for Cyprus as well, Anastasiades said that Cyprus and Greece coordinate and have identical views.

He stressed that “we need to remain calm and not follow Turkey’s path.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
