I am looking to take our very close relationship even to a higher level, Israeli Ambassador tells CNA

The relationship between Israel and Cyprus is a very special and a very close one, the new Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus Sammy Revel has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), noting that he is looking very much to taking this very close relationship even to a higher level.

Referring to the Trilateral Meeting of the leaders of Cyprus, Greece and Israel that was going to take place in Nicosia on January 8 but was postponed, the Ambassador said that “it was postponed because of technical, logistical reasons, but now we are working very closely with all the partners, trying to find very quickly a new date” for this meeting, underlining that “the trilateral cooperation is extremely important.”

Revel said that “the relationship between Israel and Cyprus is a very special relationship, a very close relationship. First of all we are two democracies in this region and we share a lot of strategic interests, security interests, but also economic interests for example in the fields of energy, tourism, technological innovation, and above all we are really two friendly nations, very good friends, very close friends,” he noted.

He said that “there is a special bond between Israeli people and the Cypriot people which goes back to the days when the state of Israel was created 70 years ago. So I am looking very much to taking the very close relationship even to a higher level, solidifying the partnership, the strategic partnership, the economic parthership and also strengthening even more the friendship between our peoples,” he said.

He noted that “we live in a region which unfortunately knows a lot of instability and also extremist movements, terrorism movements, and it is only by our close cooperation that Israel and Cyprus, also together with other like-minded countries in the region, we can ensure for our own citizens a better future, a more secure future, a more stable future, a more prosperous future. This is what we want to achieve.”

Asked about the Trilateral Meeting of the leaders of Cyprus, Greece and Israel that was going to take place on January 8 but has been postponed, the Ambassador noted that “it was postponed because of technical, logistical reasons, but now we are working very closely with all the partners trying to find very quickly a new date for the Trilateral (Meeting).”

Revel said that it depends on the timetable of the three Heads of State, adding that “we will work on it and I am sure it is going to be very soon.”

He stressed that “the trilateral cooperation is extremely important. There are some very specific areas of cooperation, for example if we talk about the preparedness for emergency situations this is extremely important,” he said

We still remember, he noted, “when Cypriot firemen came to help us to extinguish the fires in Israel and also our planes were flying together with fire extinguishing planes in Cyprus to fight the fires on the Troodos mountains. So this is one field. But we have so many fields also in terms of economic cooperation, in terms of people to people cooperation, in the trilateral framework. So we are looking to set a date very quickly, so we can continue this very important cooperation,” he added.

The Ambassador also said he was very moved by his warm reception in Cyprus “and especially by the warm reception” of the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, during the presentation of his credentials last Friday.
