House Speaker says Parliament has the capabilities to tackle expectations of the future

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris has said the House has the capabilities and vision to tackle the expectations of the future and needs to be present in the international arena to promote Cyprus’ geopolitical position and importance.

Syllouris was addressing an event organized by the Embassy of Cyprus and the Cypriot overseas organisations in Athens on the role of the House of Representatives in modern times and the necessary reforms.

He referred to the Protocol of Cooperation between the Parliaments of Cyprus and Greece regarding the access to the Cyprus File, adding that with the publication of the Cyprus File, light will be shed on dark aspects of the Cyprus tragedy while ending an issue that has been pending for many years, restoring a moral order among the people.

Referring to the topic of his speech, Syllouris said strengthening the state is a necessity to handle important problems and added that the House produces rich legislative work, exercises parliamentary control and develops parliamentary diplomacy at an international and European level. At the same time, it promotes communication with citizens and supports culture and social activities.

Since taking up office in June 2016, he said, he has been working to tackle the issue of excessive and badly written legislation, creating a legal department in the House, fully utilizing existent staff, appointing a press spokesperson and upgrading communication with citizens, developing the House’s relations with the media and more.

He also said that the House needs to become autonomous on both financial and managerial levels, allowing it to be more flexible and effective. Syllouris further added that the House will proceed with a review of its regulations.

Regarding parliamentary diplomacy, he said although it is active and enlightens on the Cyprus problem and the efforts to resolve it, the House needs to have a presence in the international arena and express its views on regional and international problems, to promote Cyprus’ geopolitical position and importance.

Furthermore, he said the House needs to have a substantive role in the dialogue that develops between national parliaments and EU institutions.
