House President wraps up visit to China

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris has wrapped up his visit to China, noting the advantages of Cyprus and the prospects opening for cooperation.

According to a House press release, after his meetings in Beijing and Shanghai, Syllouris met with Director of Standing Committee of 12th Guangdong Provincial Peoples Congress, Li Yumei, accompanied as in all his meetings outside Beijing by Vice President of the Chinese Peoples Institute of Foreign Affairs, Liang Jianquan. The meeting was also attended by high ranking members of the local Congress.

Welcoming Syllouris, Li pointed out that in the framework of longstanding relations between Cyprus and China, the Guangdong Province and its capital, Guangzhou, have developed increased commercial ties with Cyprus.

Li also informed Syllouris about the current financial situation in the region, and presented the development plan of the local authorities, based on the guidelines adopted by the 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party.

She furthermore referred to the large tourist wave of Guangdong in China and abroad, noting that Cyprus could become a very good destination for the citizens of her province.

Agreeing, Syllouris referred to the advantages of Cyprus as a tourist destination and investment centre, as well as a bridge for economic cooperation of China with European and Middle East countries. He also pointed out the prospects opening for cooperation in research, technology, education, and culture.

During his stay in Guangzhou, Syllouris visited the Development Zone, where he toured exhibition sites and technological innovation units, with emphasis on its applications in the sectors of biotechnology, culture, and the arts.

The House President will be departing from China later tonight and will arrive in Cyprus on Tuesday morning.
