House President says resumption of Cyprus talks difficult due to Turkey’s stance

Turkey’s rigid stance and illegal activity in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) render the resumption of talks for a just settlement of the Cyprus problem very difficult, House President Demetris Syllouris said on Tuesday.

He was speaking during a meeting, in Nicosia, with the Poland-Cyprus Friendship Group in the Parliament of Poland, whose members pay a visit to Cyprus after an invitation by the House of Representatives. The polish delegation expressed during the meeting support to the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to an announcement by the House, Syllouris thanked the Polish MPs for the principled stance of their country vis-A-vis the Cyprus problem and noted the good level of relations between Cyprus and Poland.

He also said that friendly countries, which are also EU member states, such as Cyprus and Poland, should adopt common policies, on the basis of principles, aiming to address common challenges in the wider region.

Ryszard Bartosik, the President of the Friendship Group, expressed his conviction during the meeting with Syllouris that the already close relations between the two countries will continue to grow. He reiterated that his country insists in supporting the territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, while other MPs also said that their country is against any occupation.

The polish delegation also met with the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Cyprus-Poland Friendship Group in the House of Representatives. Committee President Yiorgos Lillikas said during the meeting that European partners ought to exert pressure on Turkey and prove with deeds their solidarity towards Cyprus, the country suffering from Turkey’s illegal activities in the EEZ.

A separate announcement by the House of Representatives notes that Lillikas thanked Polish MPs for their country’s stable position with regard to Cyprus’ struggle to get rid of Turkish occupation and to solve the Cyprus problem with peaceful means. Bartosik invited the Friendship Group to pay a visit to Poland the soonest possible.
