House President refers to democratic deficit, during EU Conference in Vienna

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris has pointed out the failure of the EU to restore the trust of European citizens in European institutions, noting that the democratic deficit is being used to disorientate European citizens from the joint European vision.

Speaking at the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments, hosted by the Austrian parliament, Syllouris said the European citizens expect more Europe in sectors concerning their daily lives, as well as an anthropocentric Europe, which will meet its socioeconomic expectations and fully address important issues, such as terrorism and migration.

Referring to the European Elections, Syllouris said the aim was a greater participation of citizens, which would render the EU a platform of democracy, where citizens could express their views on the common European future and their voice would be heard.

The Conference wrapped up its works with the adoption of Conclusions.
