The President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Syllouris, had a meeting today with the Minister of Defence of Armenia, Mr Vigen Sargsyan, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus following an invitation of his Cypriot counterpart. The Armenian Minister was accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Mr Christoforos Fokaides, and high-level officials from both sides.
During the meeting, Mr Syllouris and Mr Sargsyan praised the traditionally close and friendly relations of the two countries, which are based on the historic and cultural ties between the two peoples. Both sides expressed their satisfaction for the enhancement of the cooperation between Cyprus and Armenia in the field of defence.
The Minister of Defence of Armenia briefed Mr Syllouris on the relations of Armenia with the EU and expressed his country’s gratitude for the support provided by Cyprus, both bilaterally and multilaterally, as well as for other international issues of Armenian interests.
Then, Mr Syllouris briefed Mr Sargsyan on the current phase of the Cyprus problem, expressing his concerns for the increased presence of Turkish settlers in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus. Especially, he highlighted the dangers that might be caused from the alteration of the demographic character of the island.
Finally, views were exchanged on the current developments in the wider region.
