House President reaffirms Cyprus’ steadfast support to Ukraine and its people

House President, Annita Demetriou, has reaffirmed Cyprus’ steadfast support to Ukraine and its people, on the basis of international law principles.

Demetriou received on Tuesday the Ambassador of Ukraine to Cyprus, Ruslan Nimchynskyi. According to a House press release, Demetriou noted that international law principles were blatantly violated in Cyprus, as a result of the Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation.

She noted that however in this case the international community did not show the same sensitivity and determination as in the case of Ukraine. No illegal occupation and secession can be accepted, she underlined.

On his part, Nimchynskyi expressed sincere thanks for the multilevel support and solidarity which his country receives from Cyprus and briefed Demetriou about the latest developments as regards the war.

Moreover he noted that respect and support of international law is an obligation which all states must fulfill and that those who fail to do so must be accountable and be punished in all cases, with no exemptions.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.
