House President meets with Russian parliamentarians

House Speaker Dimitris Syllouris met on Thursday with the deputies of the Russian State Duma Andrey Klimov, Vladimir Lukin and Alexander Vaynberg whom he briefed on the Cyprus problem, referring to the long-standing intransigent positions of Turkey.

A press release issued by the Cyprus House said that the Russian deputies are in Cyprus to attend the events organized in the framework of the third Pan-European Festival Marathon which this year is included in the events of Pafos 2017.The deputies were accompanied at the meeting by the Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Stanislav Osadchiy.

Addressing the deputies, Syllouris said that Cyprus and Russia share close ties, adding that the Cyprus parliament stands ready to further enhance their relations at the parliamentary level. On his part, Klimov expressed Russias support to Cyprus.

Syllouris and the Russian MPs also discussed about international issues, focusing on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks between the leaders of the two commuities, namely Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, began in May 2015 with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof.
