House President hopes EP resolution on Turkey will reflect seriousness of provocations in Cyprus’ EEZ

House President Demetris Syllouris expressed hope that a resolution to be adopted by the European Parliament will reflect the seriousness of the Turkish provocations in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Syllouris participates in the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments that takes places in Tallin, Estonia.

According to a press release issued by the Cyprus parliament during Monday’s deliberations, the Presidents of the Parliaments discussed about the future of the EU. In his speech during the debate, Cyprus’ House President said that we need to find solutions that will lead to a safe and prosperous EU.

He said that EUs security and safety is of paramount importance and added that collective security also relates to the security of each member state. He noted that the latest European Commission report on Turkey makes reference to the Turkish provocations in Cyprus EEZ and airspace and expressed hope that the relevant resolution of the European Parliament would reflect the seriousness of the issue.

Syllouris also stressed the need for the European Union to make substantial institutional changes which will be visible to the citizens and will respond to the concerns regarding the democratic deficit, unemployment, sustainable development and the quality of life.

Furthermore, he spoke about the Economic and Monetary Union as well as the Banking Union and the benefits of development, social cohesion, economic convergence and financial stability.

Nicosia is currently developing natural resources discovered within the Republic’s exclusive economic zone. Last February, Turkish warships blocked twice a vessel bound for drilling activities in Cyprus’ EEZ block 3 on behalf of Italian energy company ENI.
