House President deplores Turkish provocations at EU Speakers Conference in Austria

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris has deplored the continued provocative actions of Turkey in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.

He was speaking during an exchange of views at the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments, hosted by the Austrian parliament.

Syllouris pointed out that these actions aim at questioning and terminating the Republic of Cyprus’ and the EU’s energy plans.

The House President said there should be no updating of Turkey’s Customs Union with the EU without the country meeting its obligations towards Cyprus.

He also noted the importance of the EU developing ties with other countries in the broader neighbourhood, towards security, peace, democracy, growth and prosperity.

Syllouris furthermore said Cyprus supports EU strategies in this direction, adding value to the effort to address challenges, such as migration, terrorism, and the implementation of international law and the acquis Communautaire.

He also informed the Conference on Cyprus’ initiatives for regional cooperation, acting as a bridge to the Middle East, which enhanced the EU’s energy security inter alia.

Syllouris noted that the House of Representatives has promoted and participates in trilateral cooperation on a speaker level with Greece and Israel, and Greece and Egypt. He added that this month the first meeting between Cyprus, Greece and Jordan will be held. The aim, he said, was to promote cooperation on a permanent basis, which would also serve the EU in promoting peace and cooperation in the broader region.
