House President co-signs article with other female counterparts on the occasion of the International Women’s Day

President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou has co-signed a joint article on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.

The article is co-signed by the female Presidents of Parliaments of Spain, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Romania at the initiative of ?eritxell Batet Lamaña, President Congress of Deputies of Spain.

In their article, they state that every 8th March, the demand for gender equality is in the spotlight of public opinion.

On this occasion, the undersigned female Speakers of the European parliaments want to join the voices that call for full equality between men and women, because gender equality is one of the basic consensuses of our democracies and, at the same time, a hallmark of Europe as political project, they state.

A press release by the Parliament notes that they also expressed their willingness for cooperation between the national parliaments of the member states, as well as with the institutions of the European Union, to eliminate the obstacles so that this goal becomes reality.

In their joint article, the Presidents underline that unity is necessary to promote European principles and values, which, in the light of international developments, are important especially for women and girls who are suffering because of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
