House President and CoR President discuss role of local authorities

The role of the local authorities was one of the issues that were discussed during the meeting of the House President, Annita Demetriou, with the President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Apostolos Tzitzikostas, on Friday, at the House of Representatives.

A press release by the House of Representatives says that the role of local authorities in general in building a closer relationship between regions and the European Union (EU) and in improving the lives of citizens, the reform of local self-government in Cyprus, the effects of the war in Ukraine in the fields of energy and immigration, as well as aspects of the Cyprus problem were discussed.

Tzitzikostas referred in particular to the example of the evolution of local government in Greece through the reduction of municipalities, but also in general to the benefits that arise for local government and therefore for EU citizens.

On her part, Demetriou underlined the importance of the initiative undertaken by the Republic of Cyprus for the digitisation of the services provided to the citizens on the basis of the know-how obtained from Greece, while also referring to the enactment of the legislation for the reform of local government in Cyprus.

Finally, she assured the President of the CoR that the House of Representatives, as well as the Cypriot local self-government will continue to maintain close communication with the CoR in order to improve the quality of life of citizens.
