Health Minister and scientific committee assess COVID situation in Cyprus, advice to public on respiratory tract infections

Health Minister Michalis Hajdipantela and the scientific committee on COVID met on Monday and assessed the situation in Cyprus. They also decided to issue advice to the public as regards the respiratory tract infections ahead of Christmas holidays.

An announcement issued by the Ministry says that suggestions were made by the members of committee and it was decided that instructions will be issued by the Ministry of Health on how the citizens should protect themselves.

Moreover the Ministry will intensify its actions to increase the vaccination coverage of the population against COVID-19 and especially to increase vaccinations with a booster dose.

Member of the committee Professor Petros Karayiannis told the Cyprus News Agency that the situation at the moment as regards COVID is encouraging.

He said that recommendations will continue to be in place for self protection measures especially during the holidays and the gatherings. Professor Karayiannis advised the people to wear a face mask in crowded places and have a self-test in case of symptoms and especially before meeting others.

Karayiannis said that at the moment there is an outbreak of influenza A in children. Soon, he added, the virus will affect adults, especially the elderly and therefore it is better to get vaccinated. He went on to say that there is no reason for concern.
