Head of Blood Bank urges citizens to donate blood before they head off on vacation

Head of Blood Bank Androula Panagiotou urged citizens to donate blood before they head off for their summer vacation to keep up availablee blood quantities on the island at a safe level.

She told the that at the moment no life is in danger. But she went on to underline that the blood donation these days is low, therefore we need to keep the blood levels safe.

According to the protocols, she said, we need to have 250-300 bottles of blood daily, islandwide.

Panagiotou said that text messages are sent to donors and personal phone calls are made to make sure that we keep the levels high.

Blood donations are still being organised and according to Panagiotou these days donations will take place in mountainous areas to accommodate visitors, residents and others who are vacationing there.

All blood stations will remain open daily except on August 15.

Donors can give blood 15 days after they have been infected with COVID. Men can give blood every 3 months and women every 4 given that they are all healthy. Check ups are made upon donation and doctors are present in each station.
