Guterres reiterates UN commitment to Cyprus process at New York meeting with President Anastasiades

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated the readiness and commitment of the United Nations “to continue supporting and facilitating the Cypriot owned and leader led process” Deputy UN Spokesman Ferhan Haq said during yesterdays briefing at the UN headquarters.

Referring to the meeting between “the Secretary-General with Nicos Anastasiades, the President of the Republic of Cyprus and Greek Cypriot leader”, Haq said the two men “discussed the state of play in the negotiations, in particular the latest developments which have let to the current impasse”.

He added that the Secretary-General noted “the serious efforts that are currently underway to overcome the impasse in their near future” and expressed hope that talks would resume as soon as possible.

“He also hoped that once they resume, both sides would expedited their deliberations, building on the progress they have achieved in the past 22 months in order to move the process forward in a decisive matter towards a conclusion of a comprehensive settlement” Haq went on.

Asked whether there is a planned meeting between the Secretary General and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, Haq said he will offer information on further meetings on Cyprus whenever those are confirmed.
