Gueterres could stay overnight at Conference on Cyprus, if needed, reliable sources tell CNA

UN Secretary General Antonio Gueterres will arrive on Friday morning in Geneva, Switzerland and will travel by helicopter to Crans Montana to lead the negotiations on the Conference on Cyprus, which began on Wednesday with the issue of security and guarantees.

According to reliable sources, who talked to CNA, Gueterres may stay all day on Friday at Crans Montana and if needed he will also stay overnight. He will lead table 1 where the discussion on security and guarantees has been led today by his Special Advisor, Espen Barth Eide. UN Under Secretary-General Jeffrey Feltman who participated in the begging of Conference on Cyprus has left the Swiss town on Thursday morning.

Gueterres will have lunch tomorrow with the leaders of Cyprus’ two communities, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, and dinner with the heads of the delegations participating in the Conference.

The Conference on Cyprus, being held under the auspices of the United Nations, started on Wednesday morning at Le Regent Congress Centre in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a view to reaching a negotiated settlement that would reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.
