?he Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties meeting regularly at Ledra Palace, Nicosia’s buffer zone under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy in Cyprus, exchanged on Wednesday views on how to move forward after the deadlock in the Swiss resort Crans – Montana last summer and reaffirmed their determination to continue working towards a viable and lasting solution of the Cyprus problem.

According to a joint communique read out by the Ambassador of Slovak Republic, Jan Skoda they expressed opinions on the issue proposed by the hosting party, the Democratic Rally/DISY: A Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation based on the UN parameters, remains the only feasible solution for the reunification of Cyprus

The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties at the Ledra Palace will be announced in due time.

Addressing today’s meeting Democratic Rally (DISY) President Averof Neophytou said his party does not share the opinion that a solution is not possible under the UN parameters or that a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, as it is described in the UN Security Council Resolutions and the high level agreements, cannot continue to be the basis of the negotiations.

We strongly believe that the current status quo is not viable. Our current prosperity is fragile without a permanent and viable solution of the Cyprus problem said Neophytou adding that extreme nationalism is always waiting for the right conditions to rise up, if not dealt with permanently.

Time is not a luxury that we have, after four decades of division, most Cypriots do not have shared memories or experiences of living together, he stated. It is our duty towards future generations, to reach a permanent, viable and lasting solution, he stressed.

Neophytou added that DISY remains deeply committed in achieving a lasting, functional and viable solution of the Cyprus problem based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, in accordance with international law, the UN Security Council Resolutions and the European values and principles.

We in the Democratic Rally, strongly support the continuation of the negotiations under the framework and the parameters of the Secretary General of the United Nations. We do not believe in Plans B or C. For us, the only feasible plan is the successful completion of the negotiations within the UN parameters.

The framework for a settlement upheld by Security Council Resolutions, the EU values and principles and the 6-point framework of the UN Secretary General provide the grounds to move forward, he added.

For us the six-point framework as a package and each and every element of it being subject to the others, offers the grounds for the needed breakthrough, that will allow to effectively tackle also all other outstanding issues, DISY President stated.

Representatives of three Turkish Cypriot parties, National Unity Party, Democratic Party and People’s party did not take part in today’s meeting, in Ledra Palace.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Political parties, on both sides of the divide, have been meeting over the years in an attempt to contribute to the ongoing peace effort, aiming at a comprehensive settlement that would reunite the country under a federal roof.
