Government sets up home for abused women

A home for abused women where they can file a complain and get support will soon be set up following a decision taken by the Cabinet. Details were given on Thursday during a press conference by Ministers of Labor Zeta Emilianidou and Justice and Public Order Ionas Nikolaou.

Emilianidou said that the home will have specialized staff namely clinical psychologists, social workers, trained Police officers and other who will provide assistance to women, victims of domestic violence and to their families.

She also said that the Cabinet’s decision provides for the set up of a ministerial committee comprised herself, the Justice Minister and the Health Minister which will oversee the operation of the home.

Head of the Advisory Committee for the Prevention and Combating of Violence in the Family, Susana Pavlou and members of the Committee will act as the coordinators of the home.

The Minister pointed out that the Government will spare no effort for the home to become a reality because it values the issue of human rights and works hard to tackle the domestic violence.

Justice Minister in his statements said that the home will encourage and facilitate women, victims of abuse, to get support and file complains. He said that these women are probably the most populated group of vulnerable people in the Cyprus society.
