Government employment increases by 0.8% in December

In December 2019 total government employment increased by 411 persons (0.8%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2018 and reached 52.470 persons.

According to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, permanent staff decreased by 550 persons (-1.9%), from 28,399 to 27,849 persons. Casual staff increased by 7.1% and reached 16,153 persons compared to 15.077 persons in December 2018.

During the period January – December 2019 the total government employment increased by 362 persons (0.7%) compared to the corresponding period of 2018.

Compared to December 2018 there is an increase of staff in all personnel categories except Civil Service, with the largest observed in Education (3%) and more specifically in the number of casual staff which increased by 17.8% (656 persons).

Compared to November 2019, a decrease is observed in both Civil Service and Security Forces with the largest increase in the permanent staff of Security Forces (-0.2%). Education staff increased by 88 persons (0.6%).
