More specifically, Commissioner Hahn, in a press conference following the Council, noted the following: “concerning Turkey: The Council confirmed that the country keeps moving away from the EU, by its own decisions.”
“Therefore, the de facto hold to the accession negotiations which the Council decided last year, remains in place”, he stated.
“Our discussion was affected significantly by the situation of the hydrocarbon drilling of Turkish boats inside the Cypriot EEZ, which is unacceptable and, therefore, the Council Conclusions referred to these very recent developments and may I now quote: the Council underlines the serious immediate negative impact that such illegal actions have across the range of EU-Turkey relations and further the Council invites the Commission and the EEAS to submit options for appropriate measures without delays, said the Commissioner.
“These can include, besides others, funding or high level meetings”, he explained.
