Francophonie month launched in Nicosia

Under the slogan the French language unites us and makes us active citizens, events marking the international month of the Francophonie were presented, in Nicosia, on Monday.

All events are organised with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Embassies and Consulates of member states of the Francophonie, in Cyprus.

Addressing a press conference, Education and Culture Minister Costas Kadis said that 48 years have passed since the International Organisation of the Francophonie was established. Cyprus participates in the organisation as an associate member since 2006.

Today, 84 states and governments representing 900 million people take part in the International Organisation of the Francophonie, Kadis said, adding that the international body which has French as a common language promotes dialogue, solidarity and peace.

Priorities for the organisation include dealing with various humanitarian issues, supporting education, research, promoting culture and sustainable development, he added.

Head of the Francophonie Committee of the ?inistry Niki Papa presented in French and in Greek the events which will take place during the Francophonie month.

She noted that in cooperation with the French Institute a pancyprian competition was organised ?n the past and present Francophone cultural heritage in the Mediterranean, in the context of the European year of cultural heritage 2018.

According to Papa students from 39 lyceums and 37 high schools took part in the competition. An award ceremony will take place in Kastelliotissa, Nicosia, on Wednesday March 21.

Events marking the Francophonie month will take place between March 4 and April 1 and include competitions, discussions, theatre, movies, concerts, lectures and art exhibitions.

Francophonie dedicated events begin with the opening of the 13th Francophonie Film Festival, in which Cyprus takes part with the movie Boy on the Bridge by Petros Charalambous.
