France rejects Turkish side’s position for a two-state solution, its Ambassador says

France categorically rejects the position of the Turkish side for a two-state solution in Cyprus, French Ambassador to Cyprus, Salina Grenet-Catalano, said on Friday, during a meeting she had with House of Representatives President, Annita Demetriou.

According to a House press release, Grenet-Catalano underlined the importance of finding common ground, that will lead to the resumption of the negotiations aiming at a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

On her part, the House President expressed sincere appreciation for the position of principles and the steadfast support of France, as a UN Security Council permanent member and an EU member state, as regards the Cyprus problem and efforts to solve it.

On the issue of Famagusta, Demetriou underlined the importance of Cyprus being supported by the international community, including France, with a view to avert blatant violations of the international law and the UN Security Council relevant resolutions by Turkey.

The House President briefed the French Ambassador about her activities on the issue of Famagusta towards her European and many other states and international parliamentary organisations counterparts, asking for their support to safeguard the international law.

Both sides underlined the importance of reinforcing the excellent relations and cooperation between the two countries. As regards the cooperation between the parliaments of Cyprus and France, Demetriou and Grenet-Catalano exchanged views on concrete initiatives and actions, both at the bilateral and European level, particularly in the framework of the French Presidency of the EU Council during the first six months of 2022.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, and so far numerous UN backed efforts to reunite the island failed to yield results.
