Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs Minister, Constantinos Kombos, has a meeting on Tuesday at the UN seat in New York with UN Secretary – General, Antonio Guterres, in the framework of efforts to create the conditions for resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
Kombos will inform Guterres about Nicosia’s positions regarding efforts for the resumption of the under the UN auspices dialogue for a Cyprus settlement.
According to the program of the UNSG’s appointments the meeting will begin at 1530 New York time.
Kombos has stated that during the meeting he will present Nicosia’s approach with regard to ways for the resumption of talks, adding that the objective is “to prepare the ground in the framework of a process that seems to be kicking off, with a view to creating the conditions for returning back to the negotiations.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
