First “Beyond Plastic Litter Champion” Award Ceremony takes place in Cyprus

The first Beyond Plastic Litter Champion Award Ceremony, to recognise sustainable practices implemented by beach bars and beach restaurants in Cyprus, took place on Tuesday in Cyprus.

According to a press release by the AKTI Project and Research Centre, the ceremony took place aboard the vessel M/V DOREMI, which took participants on a mini cruise along Larnaka’s coastline.

The Award Ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, Ambassador of Spain, Angel Lossada, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Nathalie Jaarsma, representatives from the British High Commission and other distinguished guests.

The Beyond Plastic Litter Champion Competition and Award Ceremony aimed to engage and encourage owners of beach bars, snack shacks and beach restaurants located on Cypriot beaches to take ownership of ‘their’ stretch of beach and implement practices that will minimise the amount of litter, especially plastics, released into the environment by their customers.

“The unique and innovative nature of the initiative has attracted the attention of international organizations in an attempt to export this concept abroad, with Cyprus leading the way,” the press release says.

The competition was implemented by AKTI Project and Research Centre, in collaboration with the Pancyprian Association of Entertainment Venue Owners. The award ceremony was supported by Larnaca Municipality.

The entire initiative is being implemented within the framework of the Fighting Plastic Pollution in Cyprus: The Responsible Beach Bars Initiative project, which has been awarded to AKTI Project and Research Centre by Beyond Plastic Mediterranean (BeMed), funded by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.
