Fifth Cyprus Pride takes place

Under the slogan #make the change, the week-long 5th Cyprus Pride Festival culminated on Sunday with the Pride Parade, which was followed by a party at the Nicosia municipal garden.

Transport Minister Vassiliki Anastasiadou addressed the event, on behalf of Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades, and spoke of the steps the government has taken and is planning to take in order to cultivate respect for human rights and diversity.

She referred in particular to the legislation on political cohabitation which was enacted by the Cyprus Parliament, as well as the criminalization of hate speech as regards sexual orientation and gender identity, noting that the government is looking into making implementation of the legislation more functional.

Anastasiadou also said that a bill will be tabled in Parliament on gender identity while a national committee for the promotion of multiculturalism and accepting diversity will be established.

Cultivating the full respect of human rights and accepting diversity by everyone constitutes the cornerstone of this government’s social philosophy and approach, she stressed.
