Fannon’s visit to Cyprus sends political messages, says the government

A visit to Cyprus by US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Francis Fannon, sends political messages, Government Spokesman Kyriacos Koushos said on Tuesday. He also noted that a drill ship is expected at the end of March or beginning of April, to start drilling in the exclusive economic zone.

Speaking at the Presidential Palace, Koushos said that Fannon’s visit was very important, confirming the upgraded relations with the United States, as well as the interest of the US for energy matters in the region.

Asked about the energy program of the Republic of Cyprus, Koushos said that there is progress with regard to drilling activities.

He explained that a drill ship completed the work in Egypt and is expected in Cyprus after drilling in Lebanon. The exact time cannot be determined, but we estimate this to happen sometime in late March or early April he noted.

Asked about Monday’s meeting between the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, about the measures to contain the spread of coronavirus, Koushos said that the bicommunal Technical Committee on Health discussed the matter and took certain decisions. The President of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot leader attended the meeting to guide the Technical Committee and confirm what was agreed, the Spokesman concluded.
