Famagusta Municipality supports resumption of Cyprus talks

The Municipality of Famagusta unreservedly supports the resumption of talks for a solution of the Cyprus problem, noting that this process is the only way to peacefully solve the Cyprus issue and reunify the island.

The Cyprus problem is at the most crucial point in its history. Many opportunities have passed. Time and the prolonged standstill are proving not to be our allies, as the lead to division and the integration of the occupied areas in Turkey with extremely dangerous consequences, the Famagusta Municipality says in a press release.

It notes that the current status quo is unacceptable and destructive, it does not reunify Cyprus but makes reunification a more distant possibility, it makes the Turkish occupation permanent, and strengthens extremist tendencies in both communities.

The Municipality calls on President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades to utilise the intention of the UN Secretary General to send a special envoy to Cyprus, and calls on all political forces in both communities to realise that Famagusta can restore hope for a permanent and viable solution.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
